Types of Breast Implants for Breast Augmentation

Women interested in breast augmentation (specifically augmentation using breast implants) should educate themselves about the various types of breast implants available.

At Bay Area Breast Augmentation, our purpose is to educate and enlighten woman about the different options that they can take when undergoing breast augmentation surgery. Below we briefly describe the six primary types of breast implants used for breast augmentation.

Saline Breast Implants

Of the most common types of breast implants for breast augmentation, saline breast implants. Saline breast implants offer a uniform shape, as well as natural firmness and feel. They are also FDA-approved for breast augmentation in women who are 18 years of age or older.

The mass of saline breast implants contains sterile salt water. In rare instances that an implant shell starts to leak, the implant will simply collapse and the saline will be absorbed and expelled naturally with no health risks.

Silicone breast implants

Another very common type of implant for breast augmentation is silicone breast implants. Filled with silicone gel, silicone breast implants are highly sought after because they feel very similar to natural breast tissue. Silicone implants are FDA-approved for breast augmentation in women who are 22 years of age or older.

In the instance that a silicone breast implant leaks, the gel will often remain within the implant shell, or in some cases, leak into the pocket of the breast implant.

If you and your plastic surgeon come agree that silicone breast implants are a good option for your case, expect to make regular visits to your surgeon to ensure the implants are maintaining good form and functioning properly.

Round breast implants

Round breast implants are the same shape all over, and with higher profile options, these types of implants can provide great projection and shape for breast augmentation. They often make breasts appear more full and there is less concern about round breast implants rotating out of place in the pocket.

Form-stable (Gummy Bear) breast implants

Form-stable breast implants (also known as “gummy bear implants”) will maintain their size and shape even if the implant shell is broken. They have a thicker consistency of silicone gel inside (compared to standard silicone breast implants) so they are both firmer and perceived as likely to break.

The shape of gummy bear breast implants are slight unique compared to other forms, as they offer more projection and fullness at the bottom of the breast and taper naturally toward the top. Although the look is attractive and natural, gummy bear breast implants can take an unusual shape if the implant happen to rotate.

Textured Breast Implants

Textured breast implants are unique in that they develop scar tissue to adhere or stick to the implant. This makes this type of breast implant less likely to move around or shift while inside of the breast, diminishing the need to have your surgeon reposition the implant later down the road.

An added benefit to using textured implants for breast augmentation is that they diminish the risk of developing tight scar capsule.

Smooth Breast Implants

Smooth breast implants are popular because the offer the softest feel compared to other options for breast augmentation. Smooth breast implants also move with the implant pocket, providing more natural feel and overall movement. The downside to this type of breast implant is that they sometimes have some visible rippling.

Choosing The Best Breast Implant for Breast Augmentation

It’s important to consult with your Bay Area plastic surgeon to discuss the best implant for your breast augmentation needs. Breast implant manufacturers often come out with types of breast implants, so more options may come available in time.

Whether a woman chooses silicone, smooth, or saline breast implants, it’s advised to monitor and pay close attention to the breast implants, as well as regularly follow-up with your plastic surgeon for checkups.
